Why You Should Rent a Car on Tahiti.

Writer's picture: Christina TervortChristina Tervort

When we travel, we most often rent a car and go exploring on our own. It allows us to stay at each stop for as long or as short of a time as we feel like, plus you don’t have to hang out with other people that may be on your tour.

If you have a car, be sure and plan a day on Tahiti without an excursion planned or other plans. There are some stunning places to see; you will not regret it! All of these stops are free and have ample parking.

  • Teahupo'o Wave - This is where you will see the big (and I mean BIG) waves. Not for swimming, but the waves are incredible, and if you are there at the right time of year, there are surfing competitions.

  • Papeete market - This is the place to get all your take-home souvenirs for yourself or your family and friends. They have just about anything you could want to buy from Tahiti. Lotions, oils, wood carvings, woven bags, t-shirts, and of course, pearls. They also have some of the yummiest looking fruits, veggies, and fresh fish.

  • Water gardens of Vaipahi - Beautiful waterfalls and so many beautiful plants to see and smell!

Right off the road (on the inside island side of the road). Take the short walk and see all of it, you won’t regret stopping here!

  • Grottes de Mara - So this place is pretty dang cool. It reminded me so much of the cenotes in Mexico! It doesn’t photo too well, but the grottos look like black water and go back inside dark caves. Indeed, something you don’t see in too many places.

  • Faarumai Waterfall - We had this place to ourselves when we were there, well, unless you count the mosquitos.

They were everywhere, so we didn’t get a chance to explore too much. Pack your bug spray and walk the marked path to see the falls. I am pretty sure one you can even swim in!

  • Arahoho Blow Hole - This was one of our first stops on our tour. I could have stayed here all day long; I loved loved this place and could have spent many more hours checking it out and playing on the black sand beach.

The walk up to the blowhole is beautiful and leads to superb photo ops. There is a little shop here where you can buy pearls and other souvenirs.

  • Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Temple - We are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. So on ALL our travels, if there is a temple nearby, we find it. Often we simply sit and enjoy the grounds, sometimes we go inside, but we always always take pictures.

  • Palace Vai'ete - This is a must-do because not only is it a hoppin park with locals and tourists, but they have food trucks here at night. I could hardly decide which one to order from, and the sunset is one for the books.

  • Arahurahu Marae - Okay, full discloser here, we didn’t stop here on our day trip. It was not because I didn’t want to but because I could not get google maps to find it!! (This is a prime example of why planning ahead is a good idea). This stop is full of restored ruins believed to be a meeting place or temple. Please stop here and then tell me all about it.

I created a google map so you can find all these fun places without too much trouble. I made the map because watching me find them all with 2G data while my husband asked which way to turn was not pretty, not at all. I want to spare you the same marriage conflict :)

Have you been to any of these places? Did you have a place to add to the list? Leave a comment and tell me all about it! I’d love to hear from you.
